Community Volunteering
Volunteer counselor wanted
One of our members recently contacted your editor and President about a need. She writes: “Pencader Charter High School in New Castle has asked for some help from our members. If you followed the news over the summer you know the school almost closed for financial reasons. It is a good school and is recovering, but there are areas that could use a volunteer or two. No one has asked me to do this, but we don't have a counselor and I think this may affect our seniors, so my question is ...Would there be any counselors among our retired group that would be willing to volunteer just with the seniors a few hours a day for some part of the week? Our staff will get that job done regardless, but none of us know as much as a person who has counseled seniors on college applications, scholarships, etc. If you know of anyone who might be interested, please contact Helen at (302) 379-3827 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting (302) 379-3827 end_of_the_skype_highlighting(cell) or helen.swartz@pcs.k12.de.us.”
OPPORTUNITY TO HELP
Carla Pyle, Board member for DSEA-R brought this program to our attention:
NEW START Adult Learning Program is an adult literacy program which serves adults in the southern New Castle County area. It celebrated it's 25 year in 2010. It is sponsored by the Corbit Calloway Memorial Library in Odessa Delaware and operates with a small skeleton staff and many volunteer tutors and advisory board members. Last year the NEW START Adult Learning Program served 102 adults who wanted to go back to school and improve their basic skills. Each adult student came to the program for different reasons. Some wanted to become citizens, others wanted to help their children with homework, learn to speak English, get a better job, take the GED test or get a driver's license. What they all have in common is the need to learn and improve their lives and those of their family members.
Volunteer tutors are needed to work one-to-one or with small groups at public locations such as libraries throughout lower New Castle County. Each volunteer completes a ten hour tutor training and then is matched with a student based upon their schedule and location. Materials are provided by the program. If you would like to help with this important work, please call 378-3444 or email Susan Menei at suemenei@gmail.com

MASTER FOOD EDUCATORS WANTED
University of Delaware Cooperative Extension in New Castle County is currently recruiting adults who are interested in volunteering as Master Food Educator volunteers. These volunteers attend a “basic training (roughly 36 hours)” and then give back 40 hours over the next year supporting the Nutrition and Wellness initiatives conducted by UD Cooperative Extension in New Castle County. These initiatives include but aren’t limited to staffing educational displays at schools/health fairs, public speaking events at libraries, conducting educational programs with youth, judging 4-H projects at state fair, conducting food demonstrations as part of educational programs.
Training starts the end of January during the day. Applications are due January 20. Training is located at the New Castle County Extension office in Newark and is conducted by Cooperative Extension professionals. Volunteers would graduate from this training and then become Master Food Educators. These volunteers can choose the types of work they’d like to do to give back- from behind the scenes to public speaking to staffing exhibits.
For additional information and applications, please contact Maria Pippidis, County Director and Extension Educator, Family and Consumer Sciences, New Castle County Cooperative Extension at 302-831-1239 or you can email her at pippidis@udel.edu.
